A street that until recently had cars whizzing down it in four lanes is now full of trees, benches, and children on scooters. It hasn't disappeared; its role has just changed. Only locals are allowed to drive here, and slowly; the rest of the space belongs to people. This idea is called a "superilla" in Barcelona, a super-block, and it's one of Europe's most watched urban experiments. Not because it looks nice, but because it has numbers that seem almost incredible.
According to studies, a fully implemented model could prevent hundreds of premature deaths annually in Barcelona. That's not aesthetics. That's public health measured in lives.
What is a super-block?
The principle is surprisingly simple. A grid of roughly nine city blocks is taken, and within this larger unit, through traffic is restricted. Cars don't disappear entirely, but only locals can drive through, at a walking pace. Transit is routed along perimeter streets, while internal streets are transformed from car corridors into squares, playgrounds, and green spaces. Barcelona has ideal starting conditions for this: its regular 19th-century grid, the work of urban planner Ildefons Cerdà, is perfectly suited for such block consolidation.
A place where people used to just pass through becomes a place where they can simply "be." That's the whole essence.
Numbers that impress
Here comes the data. The ISGlobal research institute calculated that if Barcelona were to implement super-blocks to the originally proposed extent, it could prevent approximately 667 premature deaths annually. The largest portion, around 291 lives, would be due to cleaner air, another 163 to lower noise, and 117 to the mitigation of urban heat islands. The model would reduce the average annual concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the city by roughly a quarter, from 47 to 36 micrograms per cubic meter.
And it's not just about deaths. The study estimates that the average resident of Barcelona would have their life expectancy extended by approximately 200 days, and the city would save around 1.7 billion euros annually in costs associated with impaired health. Measurements in already implemented super-blocks, such as around the Sant Antoni market, have also confirmed a real decrease in nitrogen oxides and dust.
These are numbers that change the debate. A pedestrian zone ceases to be a matter of comfort or taste and becomes a matter of health and money.
From a traffic corridor to public space
What happens to a street when transit disappears from it is perhaps even more impressive than the statistics. Areas that once served cars are returned to people. More trees are planted, which cool and clean the air, benches are added, playgrounds, space for cafes and markets. The street comes alive, and neighbors who used to pass each other in cars start meeting on foot. In implemented super-blocks, people in surveys also reported improved mental well-being, simply because there was no longer so much noise and hurry around them.
It's not without controversy. Some residents and businesses worry about traffic and deliveries, and every new super-block is accompanied by debates. But Barcelona shows that when it's done well and explained, experience prevails: people who have lived in a super-block for a while usually don't want to exchange it back for a street full of cars.
Could it work here?
The final question is whether this is transferable. The honest answer is: partially. Barcelona has one big advantage, its regular grid, which Central European cities with irregular historical structures do not have. Copying the model one-to-one would not work.
However, the principle is transferable. Returning streets to people, limiting transit in inner districts, planting trees, and calming traffic can be done here too, just in a different form. Pedestrian zones, traffic-calmed streets, car-free squares – these are all steps in the same direction. And Barcelona's data provides an argument for these steps that is hard to challenge: it's not about annoying people, but about letting them breathe and live longer.
What to take away from this
Barcelona's super-blocks prove that street modification is not cosmetic but public health measurable in saved lives, billions saved, and extra days of life. The principle of returning streets to people and eliminating unnecessary traffic from them is transferable to us, albeit not in an identical form. Next time someone rejects a pedestrian zone by saying that cars have to go somewhere, it's worth remembering how much those cars actually cost in the city, and not just in money.
